What is Benadryl Liquid for Children?
Benadryl Liquid for Children is a hay fever and allergy remedy that can be used in children aged 2 and up. It’s perfect for little ones who find that their allergies get worse during hay fever season, or react when they come into contact with pet fur or dust. This yummy banana flavoured formula is ideal for fussy kids who don’t like the flavour of other medicines, or for those who don’t like to take tablets.
Why does my child have allergies?
Your child has allergies because they’re sensitive common substances they can come into contact with during the day. For example, they may be allergic to pet fur, dust, or plant pollen, which causes hay fever. When they come into contact with one of these irritants, they’ll experience uncomfortable symptoms of an allergic reaction, with some of the most common symptoms including:
- Sneezing
- A blocked or runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- Itchy eyes, ears, nose, or throat
- Coughs
- An itchy skin rash
How will liquid Benadryl relieve my child’s hay fever or allergies?
Every ml of Benadryl for Children contains 1mg of cetirizine, which is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are an allergy treatment which block the histamine released in your body during an allergic reaction. This prevents it from causing your child’s allergy symptoms, effectively tackling their cause to both relieve and prevent sneezing, itching, a runny nose, and more.
Can I give this to my child if they’re taking other medication?
If your child is taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or medicines you bought for them without a prescription, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before giving them Benadryl liquid. Some medications can interact when used together, causing unwanted symptoms or making your medication less effective. A medical professional will be able to make sure that their medicines are safe to take together and recommend alternatives if necessary.
Can adults take Benadryl for kids?
Adults can take Benadryl for kids, taking the same dose as children over 12. However, anti-allergy medications designed for adults might be easier and more convenient for you to take. However, if you don’t like taking antihistamine tablets, you may prefer a liquid medicine like this one. We’d recommend asking your doctor or pharmacist so they can help you to decide whether this medication would be more suitable for you than medicines designed for adults.
Will this product make my child drowsy?
Benadryl for Children is unlikely to make your child feel drowsy or tired after they’ve taken it. This is because cetirizine is a newer type of non-drowsy antihistamine, older types of antihistamines are usually more likely to cause drowsiness. However, your child may still experience drowsiness as a side effect of this medication, so if they do feel sleepy after each dose we’d recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist about it right away.
How much of this medicine should I give to my kids?
Use the measuring spoon included to make sure you’re giving your child the correct dose of Benadryl liquid. The amount of solution you should give to your child every day will depend on their age. The manufacturer of Benadryl recommends the following doses:
- Adults and children over 12: Give two 5ml spoonfuls once a day
- Children aged 6 – 12 years: Give one 5ml spoonful in the morning and one in the evening
- Children aged 2 – 6 years: Give one 2.5ml spoonful in the morning and one in the evening
When should this product not be used?
Benadryl for children is not suitable for use in infants under the age of 2. Do not give this product to your child if they are allergic to cetirizine dihydrochloride, hydroxyzine, piperazine derivatives, or any of the other listed ingredients. This product is not suitable for children with serious kidney problems. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before giving this product to your child if they have:
